Guest Storyteller

When I started doing a little research on what made for good blog content, I saw several articles that mentioned having guest contributors. I immediately dismissed that suggestion since no one else knew I was even thinking of having a blog. Heck, the idea was still a surprise to me. But never say never because my dad sent me the following.

“Reading about Great Daddy reminded me of the following, which you may or may not remember:

Barb had a fish tank with a few goldfish in it, so she was familiar with the circle of life. Every six months or so, one of the goldfish would die, and of course we needed an appropriate ritual. The whole family would gather around the toilet, appropriate words would be said by anyone so inspired, the toilet handle would be pulled, and the fish sent into the hereafter via the Endicott Wastewater Treatment Plant.

When we got the news that Great Daddy had died, the day got fairly somber, but we carried on as normal in an attempt not to freak-out the kids.

A daily ritual for Barb was to have a bedtime talk with her puppet about whatever was on her mind. That night she was very quiet, so “Funny Bunny” asked what was on her mind. Unsurprisingly, “I am concerned about Great Daddy.”

“Anything in particular?”

“Yes, he is really big. He’ll plug the toilet.””

I think there are a few insights we can take from this.

  1. Chamberses are a story telling people.

  2. My parents let me play adventure computer games when I was a kid to help me develop my logic skills and now I see with fresh eyes why they felt that was a good use of my time.

  3. I am quite sentimental. This is Funny Bunny, as of an hour ago. He doesn’t get out of the attic much, but I can’t bring myself to throw him away, even after some particularly aggressive purging of stuff last spring. I still can’t believe he came without a tail, which every child knows is one of the best bunny bits. The cotton ball my mom helped me glue on to fix this travesty is holding up beautifully.
